Walnut is a luxurious premium hardwood known for its dark brown tones and fine, smooth grain. With very little texture, this distinguished timber is popular with woodworkers for its durability and workability. It’s also popular with homeowners and office leaders for the statement it makes as dining and desk furniture. If you prefer the classic beauty of twilight wooden tones for your kitchen or workspace, you can’t go wrong with our walnut butcher block countertops.

How do I install the butcher blocks on cabinets?

While our unfinished products are typically used for applications like countertops, bar tops, kitchen islands, tabletops and desktops, their uses are only limited by your creativity.

For standard base cabinets fastening, follow these steps:

For open-top cabinets: First install blocking across cabinet width, approximately 1/8 inch from top of cabinet. Pre-drill pilot holes through blocking and fasten to cabinet with wood screws.

For solid-top cabinets: Install furring strips if needed. Bond to cabinet across length with construction adhesive, approximately 1/8 inch from top of cabinet.

  1. Drill holes (¼ to ½ inch diameter) through blocking or top of solid-top cabinets
  2. Apply bead of construction adhesive to blocking or furring strips
  3. Position panel on cabinet as desired
  4. Drill smaller pilot hole into underside of panel through larger holes previously drilled in blocking or cabinet top (Caution: Do not drill through surface of panel)
  5. Fit a wood screw with washer that is wider in diameter than holes in blocking or top of cabinet
  6. Insert screw through hole and fasten to underside of panel until it fits snugly against top of cabinet (select screw length that will not penetrate panel face)

Can I prepare food on these surfaces?

Augusta Surfaces products are made of 100% solid American hardwood and adhesives that are comprehensively analyzed for food-safe contact. While our products are ready to use out of the box, proper care is recommended for extended use.

We recommend treating your surface with a food grade mineral oil or an oil specifically for food contact. To apply, first lightly sand the surface (220 or finer grit). Then using a clean cloth wipe oil generously onto the surface and allow to rest for approximately 30 minutes. Wipe off excess oil with a clean dry cloth.

Depending on frequency of use, the sanding-oiling process should be repeated at least every 30-60 days. Properly oiled, the surface can be cleaned with warm soapy water after each use. A slightly chalky or otherwise splotchy appearance is an indicator that it is time to reapply oil.

As with any wood product, regardless of finish, it is best to clean spills immediately. Do not allow liquids to pool and stand on the surface. Do not apply hot pots from the stovetop to unfinished or oiled wood surface as this can leave burn marks. Consult the finish manufacturer’s recommendations regarding heat resistance if other finish is used.

Which wood species should I pick?

Wood is a remarkably flexible, strong and beautiful material, expertly engineered by nature for a variety of uses. While there are some variations in hardness, ultimately the answer boils down to aesthetics.

What will my countertop look like?

Wood is a naturally variable material. Density, color, grain pattern, grain direction, character marks and natural stains can exist to varying degrees in each species.

Any unsound defects that may exist in the incoming raw material are carefully removed leaving behind the natural character that is indicative of each species.
